I went to a wedding last weekend. It was the second in my life of friends getting married. My cousins have, and at least one friend has gotten married out-of-state, so this was a good, more-real experience. Surprisingly, it didn't weird me out at all that the couple is my age. I should correct myself: The groom was less my friend and more a guy I grew up in church with. I had never even met his bride before the wedding, but I've only heard good things about her. It was the most simple wedding I have ever seen, with hardly any flowers or ribbon, but it was also elegant and everyone seemed so happy. I thought the groom would explode with happiness! I went to the reception with my mom (who had missed the ceremony because she was working). It was fun, and good talking with people I hadn't seen since high school. The best man gave a great speech about he and the groom growing up, the differences and similarities between them, and how he really saw/felt how the bride completes him (like he always smiled when he talked about her). I sat with a girl who has had a tough year, and when the dance floor opened up, it was really tough on her (not having someone to dance with). I tried my best to cheer her up, and we'll hang out soon, but they mostly played slow songs, so I couldn't get her up and dance the hokey pokey or anything. It was good music, and I wished Aaron was there to dance with me, but it was nice seeing the wedding party dance, especially the groom and his mom. :D I will start babysitting 3 kids on Monday, 'til school starts. It's 3 hours a day, M-F. It consists of making them sandwhiches, seeing that they do their chores, and then we swim. They are a co-worker of my mom's kids. I'm excited to help out, and at least I have a set schedule! It also helps me deal with my 'real job' situation better. I've worked at a clothing store for 3 weeks now, and I knew we were going to move to the other end of the mall, but only yesterday, I found out that we'll be closed for 3 weeks. (As if it's not bad enough that I was only working about 13 hours a week). I may have the option to commute to another branch, about an hour away. The better part of that story is that the last day of work at the store is August 4th, and Aaron's coming on the 5th, so I can spend more time with him :P. And I've been so vague with names, etc., because of the recent employee getting fired over her blog. Hope that if you're stuck in the heat that's melted a good portion of this country, that you have a way to keep cool, and drink plenty of water. Tomorrow's supposed to hit 99 here.

'Moo' at the Zoo
07.19.05 (9:34 am) [edit]
Let's go back in time. I could talk about two years ago, how after a concert in the park with Rebecca St. James, and kettle chips, orange juice, and peaches (or were they nectarines?), Aaron and I had a long talk (after praying for a couple weeks,) and decided to start dating, despite fully knowing we'd soon be in different parts of the country. Today makes two years- hurray! Instead, let's go to San Diego. I was told that the San Diego Zoo is either 'the best' or one of them in this country, so I was excited to visit there while I lived in California. The day finally came May 29th. We got there in the afternoon, and were able to stay about 3 hours. I would recommend the whole day if you're able to. There is a lot to see, and it's pricey ($20?) I definitely like my free (donations-based) zoo in Racine, but it is much smaller than the zoo in San Diego. My favorite guy there was the Takin. He's very cute, like a buffalo/yak. He can be found below with the giraffes. Did you know that he has 'horns like a wildebeest, a nose like a moose, a tail like a bear, and a body like a bison'? http://www.sandiegozoo.org/ He comes from the mountains of China. The giraffes looked very precise as they walked around- like they purposefully made patterns of the distance and direction amongst themselvs, in addition to their alread-patternful selves! Elephants are my favorite animals, although takins now have a big place in my heart- they are irresitably cute to me- and I heard some noises from them I had never heard before that day. I think the male was beckoning the female, but while she came over, it seemed like she was in control. The noise was very loud; I wish I could speak Elefantian (I was attempting to in the pic)! Ed and Aaron are in the front seat, with Nicole and I in back. We picked up Heather in San Diego. The hippo was massive, but its feet seemed more like extensions of its legs- like they would not support its weight if it tried to stand. The Texas longhorns are cute, and I'm sure glad i don't have to hold those horns up!
When we first came in the zoo, there was a peacock strutting around, sitting on the fence, etc., and it was a good reminder that while it is cool that we could see all of these animals, they really aren't in their natural environment. After the zoo closed, we went out to eat at Corvette's, basically a diner with a speciality in shakes, and a 50s theme- from the decor to outfits, etc. It is easy for things to stick in Aaron's hair, such as straw wrappers. They gave us a bunch of Bazooka gum at the end, and Aaron is a great bubble-blower. He blew much bigger bubbles, but I didn't catch them on film. We were at a candy shop validating parking.

the road to family
07.12.05 (5:35 pm) [edit]
This is the last road trip blog- at least officially. Here is a reprentation of the route we took:
On Saturday, we got some breakfast at the hotel (I had cereal and tea, Aaron had a bagel and cereal). We left Springfield, Missouri, and went through St. Louis, unfortunately not stopping (Aaron wanted to, but we also wanted to make it to dinner in Wisconsin to see relatives I see annually and that he hadn't met). So we kept driving, stopping in Springfield, Illinois (isn't that funny?). We ate lunch and headed out again. Illinois can be such a long state to drive through! At least it is green (this time of year). I enjoyed the telephone poles/electricity the most. Chicago traffic wasn't bad, and the tolls were actually cheaper than in Oklahoma (there are tolls throughout the central U.S., but they're more direct, so I think the time and extra miles saved were worth it, and in Oklahoma, there was no business along the toll road- I think a scatter of gas stations, but nothing else, so open road was good.) So, the one on left is Missouri, the one on right is Illinois.
Our journey started in New Mexico Friday the 10th, and that was our longest and furthest day of driving. We proceeded through Texas, through a hailstorm, Oklahoma, and ended up in Missouri. The hail/thunderstorm was so bad that we considered staying in Texas and cancelling plans in Missouri. We couldn't drive in that- it was coming down so hard that we had to exit and wait it out. Before it got bad, there was a cool lightning storm, and I tried to take a picture of it, but it was ligtning fast- too fast for me. I got drenched just taking trash to a garbage can a few feet away. When the hail stopped and the rain let up, we headed out again, but took the alternate/side road, because of the semis who liked to plow past us leaving a wall of water and no sign of the road. Eventually the rain stopped, and the sun came out, and we made it through the rest of the trip rather uneventfully (that's good). All of these pictures are of Texas except the bottom-right (Oklahoma tollway).

We left the Grand Canyon about noon. There were cool hills and some canyons on our drive south to the interstate. There wasn't much more than that except Native Americans selling things alongside the road, and a mountain. I guess it's Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona, so that's why Aaron had to be captured in a picture with it. We then made it to New Mexico, where there is a lot of clay, and their bridges are painted southwestern colors like turquoise, purple, and pink. We stayed in Albuquerque for the night, and ate a good restaurant- very hot free salsa- tasty stuff all around. The salsa seemed like a combination of steak sauce and salsa- not chunky, but so hot both Aaron and I were crying.

and the beat goes on
07.07.05 (9:51 am) [edit]
Aren't kids fun? I'm sitting here at a library while this 3-year-old woofs and crawls around like a dog. Only minutes ago, he was reciting colors, saying, "Yew-oh" most often. I starting working at Eddie Bauer yesterday, watching training videos for 3 hours. I think I'll like the job. The girls I worked with were nice. One of them seemed like her spirit was really broken, and she's a junior in high school- it seems like a lot has happened to her so far. I also had my first physical since high school (excluding mini-ones for donating plasma, and the medical testing), and it went well. I adn't gone regularly 'cause I hardly ever get sick (not a good excuse, right?) Anyways, I had my first Pap Smear (sp?) and it was better than I expected. Not enjoyable or pleasant, but not awful. Something that I would recommend getting done if you're a girl over 18, or sexually active at any age. I know it's twisted, but I'm excited to get the results, because that means I'll get mail!! I'm looking for flights to California (like I have just about all month) but I'm still not finding any deals- and visiting there is more important than the cost, I just know I've found it for about half the price that airlines are asking.
I've been able to spend some good time with my friend Serpe.

focus on the Aarons in my life
07.02.05 (5:53 pm) [edit]
I was thinking of you, AC, when I read a homemade cookbook written by a Judith Choate. She lives in New York, and may be of no relation, but the name is still relatable! AC rocks. By the way, I made the fudge the way she suggested, and it's great- more creamy than solid, but I can't seem to get enough of it. I've been spending some good time with my family. After all this frustration with summer/life-job stuff, I've had a hard time handling it, crying and being mad more than normal. I've talked with Aaron and my parents about it, and am getting through it. I also spent some time with my dad today- running errands and visiting my grandma. It has been good. I was also able to spend some overdue time with Serpe. After church, we're planning on going to the veteran's parade. One popular? means of transportation in the Grand Canyon is riding a burro on down. If you notice the little yellow lines on the bottom-right, that's the trail. it looks so cool and far away. i think maybe I'd like to do that some time, or at least walk down to the Colorado River. We can tent down there, right? I think those birds on the left may be condors- at least they are not vultures. They soared close and the sound of their feathers? was awesome. I swear they were showing off. We were hiking with a Brazilian couple closeby.
Did you know Aaron has a twin or maybe a colorful shadow? because if you look at the pictures below, you may be convinced. I like Aaron the best, more than his twin and/or shadow. Aaron is awesome. The fence shows that it goes right to the clif, inched from it. There aren't always fences, so it can be dangerous and scary. But sure beautiful!
