barking up the wrong tree

The snow collects the good with the bad, as can be seen when it melts. This blog is my snow, holding onto my experiences.

barking up the wrong tree
03.29.06 (3:16 pm)   [edit]
Sometimes, not matter how often you call, you'll never hear who you want to on the other end.  It may be because they don't answer.  It may be because they're imaginary.  It may be because you've got the wrong number.  For me, it was the first and last ones.  I was calling our storage place to let them know we're moving out, and no one answered.  I thought it was because it was lunchtime (I ended up calling 4 times).  Then, I decided something was up, and called the 888-number, only to find my '3' was supposed to be an '8.'  Honest mistake.  Sorry '3.'  Hope you don't get mistakenly called often, or if you do, I hope you answer sometime, and it's the LOVE of YOUR LIFE and you have a cool story to tell your future children.  That whole phone thing got me thinking about other areas in our life- how sometimes we ring and ring, and no one picks up.  Why is that?  We plead with our eyes to strangers- "I'm hurting- help me!"  We talk about work when we really mean to say, "I love you- don't you get it?!"  We try explaining why Star Trek: Next Generation is far superior to Star Wars and go into great detail, to someone who'll never willingly stop on the Sci-Fi Channel.  And we wonder why no one answers.  Why we get blank stares or a clueless smile at best.  I think this whole thing also applies to life in general. I have a lot of questions, which I usually ask the closest friend at hand.  (S)he may only answer 1 of 100, but I still persist.  Now, if my friend is a botanist, and I happen to being asking something about plants, (s)he may be able to help, but if (s)he is not, and often confuses 'bush' with 'tree,' I might just be wasting both of our times.  I can't expect a fish to run in the park with me.

I like the way when I read your blog the first time, I had one impression, and when I read it a second time, I got a totally different impression. I don't know if you know linguistics, but it's like this entry is a speech act, where there's a surface meaning and then there's a totally separate, deeper level of meaning, the one you intended and form and function are no equivalent. I like it. And this is so true: "We talk about work when we really mean to say, "I love you- don't you get it?!" I do that all the time.

Cool.
I love linguistics and semantics- the intricacies and depth of our words and meanings... It's definitely the analyst in me. I'd pursue a career in it, but I'm working at unwinding and not having to know (or guess at) the reasons behind everything.
I try to be straight-forward on my page, but that's not my style, so often what I say, I intend on multiple levels in multiple ways. Illustrations definitely help me give or get a better perspective of life.

Randomness and confusion do not create good writing (or "linguistics"). Sorry. They just don't.

Thanks for being so encouraging.
I think my friends are blessed with the gift of writing- it can definitely reach people. Too bad that gift can also hurt, because it can go to the core.
I'm sorry you're confused about what I write. I try to be real and express myself. It's a good thing that it's not specifically you that I'm purposefully trying to communicate with, or that would be even more frustrating- trying to explain what I mean... but I will take note and try to make sense sometimes. My writing style doesn't often include editing and reworking what I originally wrote, so that's probably one reason I'm not a fabulous writer like my friends.

i also really enjoy the way you write! and i for one think any writer, who can use a bit of randomness, and confusion (i do all the time)... and write so beautifully and well, is that much more talented... and definitely a linguist. if you read the works of some of the greatest writers, you will see literary trends of the same. you just need to turn to the likes of elliot, twaine, orwell, plath...
i think blogging is simply a time capsule, that you (the blogger) will open in many years, and see where you were at... don't change a thing :) and there are not fabulous writers, just good story tellers, and that you definitely are. :)
(just my opinion) :)

As someone who has read the works of the greatest writers, I respectfully disagree. However, I'm not sure the purpose of a personal blog is to have great writing. So, even though I don't think it's great writing, I certainly wouldn't ask you to change anything. What you write here is for yourself, not the prying eyes of readers like me. Whether or not it is good writing is largely irrelevant.

I only took issue with natala's assertion that the randomness of the writing constitutes that it is good writing. I disagree. But then again, I don't think most people's diaries or journals are good writing in this sense. They're not meant to be, after all.

That's why I think it's best not to judge the quality of writing style on blogs at all. If this blog is "good," then does that mean someone else's is "bad"? I recoil at such a thought. That's why we shouldn't judge blogs based on writing style at all -- good or bad.
