The snow collects the good with the bad, as can be seen when it melts. This blog is my snow, holding onto my experiences.

riddles
10.06.04 (12:22 am)   [edit]

my break from the norm landed me in a mermaid story (a girl outsmarted one in the end) and good ol' Mother Goose.  Here are some riddles- and then a rhyme- please guess the answers!

1.
Lives in winter,
Dies in summer,
And grows with its roots upward!

2.
Little Nancy Etticoat,
In a white petticoat,
And a red nose.
The longer she stands,
The shorter she grows.

3.
(Mary Austin as author)
I come more softly than a bird,
And lovely as a flower;
I sometimes last from year to year
And sometimes but an hour.

I stop the swiftest railroad train
Or break the stoutest tree.
And yet am I afraid of fire
And children play with me.

Mary had a little lamb,
    Its fleece was white as snow;
And everywhere that Mary went
    The lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day;
    That was against the rule;
It made the children laugh and play
    To see the lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned him out,
    But still he lingered near,
And waited patiently about
    Till Mary did appear.

“What makes the lamb love Mary so?”
    The eager children cry.
“Oh, Mary loves the lamb, you know,”
    The teacher did reply.

I don't know about 1, but 2 is a candle and 3 is snow! I know my nursery rhymes!

2. A cigarette! Right? Am I right? Oh, I hope I am. Still don´t know what Eticoat means, though.
3.yay to my mom for getting this one!

You're right! 2 IS a candle, and 3 is snow!! It's still crazy to me that something that flake by flake (or snow-blossom) that looks so beautiful and melts so easily on your skin, when stuck together can stop a train or give cars such problems . . .
And number 1, I personally think the roots grow downward. Guesses?

While home this weekend, I brought my brother Ken to this site, and gave him the riddles- and he guessed an ICICLE for 1) right off the bat- and he's right!! So he gets the credit for that one, even though he didn't type this up himself. He didn't get the other two w/o hints, so I guess every one is sdtrong in different areas!
