I am glad God sent you a friend(s) to make you feel special Erin! You look really pretty and happy in that picture! posted by: trickangle (reply) post date: 03.11.05 (6:34 am) Erin, I'm not sure "scourge" is the word you were looking for. From m-w.com: 1 : FLOG, WHIP 2 a : to punish severely b : AFFLICT c : to drive as if by blows of a whip d : CHASTISE So what did that thrift shop ever do to YOU? posted by: Aaron (reply) post date: 03.11.05 (7:20 am) perhaps the proper word is Scoured? As in a scouring pad? posted by: Aaron's mom (reply) post date: 03.11.05 (8:27 am) I think it's scrounged! posted by: trickangle (reply) post date: 03.11.05 (10:07 am) M-w.com's definition of "scrounge": 1 : STEAL, SWIPE 2 a : to get as needed by or as if by foraging, scavenging, or borrowing b : FINAGLE, WHEEDLE -- often used with up intransitive senses : to search about and turn up something needed from whatever source is available; also : to actively seek money, work, or sustenance from any available source Although, strictly speaking, definition 2a could work in the sense used here, I think the primary usage of the term scrounge is in the sense of "scrounge up" and thus carries an intransitive connotation to the modern ear. Also, strictly speaking, to say you scrounged a thrift store would mean you acquired the store, not the things inside of it. Aaron, I also was thinking that perhaps Erin meant "scour" when I first read this post. I agree with you that it seems to be the best term to use in this case. In support of my case, consider m-w.com's third definition for the term: Main Entry: scour (3) Function: verb Etymology: Middle English scuren, probably of Scandinavian origin; akin to Swedish skura to rush intransitive senses : to move about quickly especially in search transitive senses : to go through or range over in or as if in a search posted by: SparklingSnow (reply) post date: 03.13.05 (9:01 pm) you're right, Hope- and I think I was trying to mix scrounge and scour. I knew it didn't sound right, but it seemed to fit nonetheless at the time. I ment to look/forage/search through the madness. |
